EVER NOTICE THE RATING CHANGE ON THE 540 BELAY? Still "G" Rated but only 27kN here's why:
"The
reason for this change in the kN rating has to do with
our UL certification. In 2009, UL decided that the
540 Belay fit the definition of “descent control device”
rather than “auxiliary equipment”. Because of
this, they use a different testing procedure.
In previous years, they tested the device to
destruction. With this new definition, the
testing results are actually based on the breaking point
of the smallest diameter rope recommended for use with
this device.
"Basically,
there has been no change to the 540 belay, but our
MBS rating now reflects the MBS of the minimum size of
rope to be used. You’ll notice that the 540 Large
Belay now has a MBS of 27kN, and the 540 Small
Belay only has a MBS of 23 kN. Both devices use
the same parts made from the same materials, yet
they have different MBS ratings based on the rope sizes.
Please keep in mind that this
product is NFPA 1983-2006 compliant regardless of the
changes to the MBS. |
